⭐ My Rating System

How I decide what earns a place on my shelves.

Reading is personal.

Every rating you see on Chapters & Cravings reflects my own experience with a book — how invested I felt, how much I enjoyed it, whether I connected with the characters, and if the story stayed with me after the final page.

This isn’t about deciding whether a book is objectively “good” or “bad.”

It’s simply about how that particular story worked for me at the time I read it.

⭐ Star Ratings

Overall reading experience

My star ratings are based on enjoyment, engagement, emotional impact, pacing, characters, writing style and overall vibes.

They are not based on perfection, popularity or hype. A book can have flaws and still earn five stars if I absolutely loved the experience.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ — Absolutely Loved It

A standout read.

I was hooked, emotionally invested and probably thinking about it whenever I wasn’t reading. These are the books I’d happily reread and recommend without hesitation.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ — Really Enjoyed It

A strong, enjoyable read that kept me engaged and satisfied.

There may have been a small issue or two, but overall I had a great time and would still happily recommend it.

⭐⭐⭐ — It Was Okay

An average read.

I didn’t dislike it, but it didn’t completely sweep me away either. Enjoyable enough in the moment, just not especially memorable.

⭐⭐ — Not for Me

I struggled to connect with the story, characters or writing.

There may have been parts I enjoyed, but overall it wasn’t the right reading experience for me.

⭐ — Did Not Enjoy

A rare rating.

Something simply didn’t work for me at all — whether that was the pacing, plot, characters, writing style or overall reading experience.

🌶️ Spice Rating

Heat level and explicit content

Spice ratings reflect how explicit and frequent the sexual content is, not how good the book is.

A low-spice romance can still earn five stars, while a very spicy book can still miss the mark.

Star ratings and spice ratings are always judged separately.

🫑 — No Chilli

Sweet / Kisses Only

Affection, romantic tension and perhaps a kiss or two.

No explicit content. Closed-door or completely clean romance.

🌶️ — Fade to Black / Minimal

Little to no on-page sexual content.

Any intimacy is subtle, implied or happens behind closed doors.

🌶️🌶️ — Mild

Some on-page intimacy, but nothing especially graphic or frequent.

The romance may include open-door scenes, but they remain fairly light.

🌶️🌶️🌶️ — Moderate

Noticeable spice with clear on-page scenes.

There is a good balance between plot, romance and explicit content.

🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ — Spicy

Multiple explicit scenes.

Heat and chemistry are a significant part of the overall reading experience.

🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ — Very Spicy / Explicit

Frequent, highly explicit scenes with very little fade-to-black.

Definitely for readers who enjoy high-spice romance.

Also known as: feral, send help.

🌶️ Spice is subjective. What feels mild to one reader may feel very spicy to another. My rating is simply a guide based on my own experience.

❌ DNF — Did Not Finish

Because not every book is meant for every moment.

If I DNF a book, it simply means I stopped reading before finishing.

It does not automatically mean the book is bad.

Most of the time, a DNF comes down to:

  • Not being in the right mood
  • The timing not feeling right
  • Struggling to connect with the story or characters
  • The pacing or writing style not clicking for me at that moment
  • Life getting in the way of the reading experience

📖 Important Note

If I DNF a book, there’s a good chance I may retry it in the future when the timing feels better.

Some books deserve a second chance — just at a different moment.

There are also occasions where I’ll DNF for good if I feel confident the book simply isn’t for me.

When I mark a book as DNF, I’ll always be transparent about:

  • How far I got
  • Why I stopped
  • Whether I plan to revisit it

🤎 Reading should never feel like homework.

🖤 Vibes Matter

I’m a vibes reader through and through.

Sometimes vibes tell me more than the plot ever could.

Things that regularly influence my ratings include:

  • Emotional connection
  • Character chemistry
  • Found family
  • Slow burns
  • Protective heroes
  • Emotional damage (the fictional kind 😅)
  • Comfort reads
  • Audiobook performance
  • Whether I’m still thinking about the story days later

You’ll see VibesTropes and Mood Notes throughout my reviews because they often explain why a book worked for me better than a number ever could.

🎧 Formats Matter Too

I read however suits the moment.

You’ll often see reviews based on:

  • 📖 Paperback
  • 📚 Hardback
  • 📱 Kindle
  • 🎧 Audiobook

If I listened to the audiobook, I’ll always mention the narration because a brilliant narrator can completely transform the experience.

📚 What You’ll Find in Every Review

A rating is only the beginning.

Every review on Chapters & Cravings follows a familiar structure, so you’ll always know what to expect.

Star rating, spice rating, genre, series information, reading format and all the key facts at a glance.

When relevant, I include content warnings for potentially distressing themes so you can make an informed reading choice.

A bite-sized summary if you’re just browsing.

A spoiler-free overview of the story.

The main review where I dive into characters, pacing, writing, romance, emotional impact and everything else I couldn’t stop thinking about.

Favourite tropes, overall vibes and memorable quotes where copyright allows.

Narrator discussion, performance and whether I’d recommend listening to the audiobook.

AI character artwork, Spotify playlist, Pinterest board and any other fun extras inspired by the book.

Exactly who I think will love the book—and who might not.

My closing thoughts, overall verdict and a little invitation for us to chat in the comments.

✨ A Final Note

Books are wonderfully subjective.

You might adore a book I only liked, dislike one that became a favourite, or completely disagree with my spice rating—and that’s perfectly okay.

These ratings are simply here to help explain my experience, not tell you what yours should be.

If our reading tastes happen to align, that’s wonderful. If they don’t, that’s one of the joys of books—there’s a story out there for everyone.

Thank you for spending time in this cosy little corner of Chapters & Cravings. I hope you discover your next favourite read here. 🤎📚
