⭐ Four Stars — Addictive Chemistry and One Very Broody Billionaire

I first picked up Twisted Love a few years ago, in those wild days before I started logging every book on Goodreads. I remember curling up with the paperback and meeting Alex and Ava for the first time—clearly, they made an impression, because listening to their story again on audio brought all those feelings rushing back. It’s like bumping into old friends and instantly remembering why you liked them in the first place.

The grumpy/sunshine dynamic, the emotional walls, the chemistry that absolutely refuses to behave—it all still gets me every time. There’s something so comforting about rereading a romance and finding that the butterflies and anticipation are still there, even when you know exactly where the story is headed. It’s like rewatching your favourite romcom and still grinning at all the same moments.

I do have one tiny complaint, though. Alex kept warning Ava (and us!) about his so-called dark side, and honestly, I was bracing myself for some truly wild spice. But no—he talked a big game, but the actual scenes were much tamer than I’d been led to believe. Alex, you have only yourself to blame for my raised eyebrows.

Even with that little mismatch, Twisted Love is still an addictive, emotional four-star read for me. The audiobook just made me want to dive straight into the rest of the series all over again. Honestly, I’m already eyeing my shelf and plotting which one to pick up next.

The story explores distressing childhood experiences alongside a possessive romance and darker suspense elements. How intense the spice feels is separate from how difficult those themes may be to read. Please protect your mental health and check the author’s warnings before starting; this shortened note isn’t an exhaustive list.

I first read Twisted Love in paperback a few years ago and later revisited it through the audiobook. All opinions—and my ongoing questions about Alex Volkov’s advertised dark side—are entirely my own.

💭 The Quick Take

Twisted Love is one of those brother’s-best-friend romances that just grabs you with all the opposites-attract sparks and delicious emotional messiness. I found myself promising I’d only read one more chapter, then immediately breaking that promise because the tension was just too good. Alex is all icy control, Ava is pure sunshine, and honestly, watching them bounce off each other kept me hooked—especially the second time around.

If I’m being honest, I did go in expecting a bit more spice after all the hints about Alex’s dark side. Maybe I got my hopes up for something a little wilder than what actually happened! But even if it didn’t quite deliver on that front, there was still so much to love, and the emotional payoff absolutely worked for me—yes, even on the reread.

All in all, this is a solid four-star romance I’d happily pick up again. I’d call it a three-chilli read—spicy enough to keep things interesting, but not quite scandalous. And if you’re an audiobook person, the narration made it ridiculously easy to slip right back into the story, even on a busy day.

📖 Story Snapshot — Spoiler Free

Ava Chen is one of those people who somehow manages to find little pockets of beauty everywhere, even with a past that would have most of us hiding under the duvet. Meanwhile, Alex Volkov—her brother’s best friend, of course, because the universe loves a trope—walks through life with his guard up and his feelings locked away somewhere even he probably can’t find. He’s got the money, the control, the whole mysterious vibe. Honestly, if I met him in real life, I’d probably be both intimidated and a tiny bit obsessed.

So when Ava’s brother heads off (leaving Alex in charge, which feels like asking a cat to babysit a goldfish), the two of them end up spending way more time together than either planned. Cue the classic op. Of course, it’s not all flirty banter and longing looks. Both Ava and Alex are carrying enough emotional baggage to fill a small airport. As they get closer, all those old hurts and secrets start bubbling up, threatening to ruin the thing neither of them was supposed to want in the first place. I was practically yelling at them to just talk to each other, but where’s the fun in that? Honestly, they both know this is a terrible idea, but when has that ever stopped anyone in a good book?

Honestly, both of them are lugging around enough old pain to fill a suitcase each. The closer they get, the more those secrets and walls start creeping in, and I kept wanting to reach into the book and give them both a good shake. It’s messy and complicated and exactly the kind of emotional chaos I secretly love.

📚 My Reading Experience

🔁 A Reread That Still Had Me Hooked

I’ll admit, I was a little nervous to revisit this one. I’d loved the paperback years ago, and now here I was, headphones on, about to meet all those familiar characters in audio form. Would it still feel the same, or would I end up side-eyeing my past self’s taste? Only one way to find out.

Spoiler: their chemistry still had me grinning like an idiot. I got completely swept up in their push-pull, rooting for them all over again and waiting (impatiently, as usual) for those emotional walls to finally crumble. Even though I knew exactly what was coming, it didn’t make watching their connection spark and grow any less satisfying.

And yes, the emotional payoff still landed perfectly. That’s the magic of a good reread for me—coming back and finding all those feelings waiting, just as strong as before. Like bumping into an old friend and picking up right where you left off.

🖤 The Push-Pull Dynamic Had My Full Attention

Honestly, what really grabbed me about this book was Alex and Ava’s total opposites-attract energy. Their differences aren’t just there—they’re the whole heart of the story, and I couldn’t stop noticing it.

Alex is all walls and careful silences, the kind of man who probably alphabetises his feelings and then locks them in a cupboard. Ava, on the other hand, is sunshine in book form—open, gentle, and quietly stubborn in the best way. Sure, there’s chemistry, but it’s their differences that make every scene between them feel like a little spark.

Ava keeps bringing this gentle warmth into every moment Alex tries to keep at arm’s length, and honestly, watching her kindness chip away at his defences is so satisfying. His stubbornness just gives her more to work with, and the whole thing turns into this delicious slow-burn dance. That back-and-forth? It’s exactly what kept me glued to the page.

And yes, apparently watching an emotionally unavailable fictional man struggle with having feelings is still very effective entertainment. 😂

🔥 Alex, About That “Dark Side”…

Alright, so this is where my brain and the book decided to take completely different routes.

Alex keeps warning Ava about his so-called dark side, even in the middle of the steamy bits. Naturally, my overactive imagination started preparing for all sorts of spicy shenanigans—maybe some actual kink, a hint of BDSM, something to make all those warnings feel earned.

But what I actually got? Honestly, it was much more vanilla than I’d been bracing myself for. There’s some degradation language (Ana Huang does mention it in her content notes, so points for honesty), but calling it wild would be a stretch. The spice level was way tamer than my expectations—and my expectations were doing cartwheels.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the heat we did get. My real issue was the anticipation—Alex kept making these dramatic declarations, and there I was, clutching my metaphorical pearls, waiting for things to really kick off.

Sir… you’ve mentioned this several times now. I have questions. 👀

📖 The Drama Made It Easy to Keep Going

Honestly, even with my little reservations, I still found myself completely swept up in Twisted Love. You know that feeling when you promise yourself just one more chapter and suddenly it’s midnight? That was me.

The pacing never lets you get bored, and the secrets and emotional tension? Oh, they pile on the drama in the best way. I loved how the chemistry and all those tangled backstories kept tugging me along. Every time I thought I had a handle on things, there was another awkward moment or twist to keep me guessing.

The drama really delivers. This is exactly the sort of book where ‘just one more chapter’ turns into a total lie, because you have to know what happens when these two finally stop dodging their feelings.

Listening to the audiobook brought all that addictive energy right back. Same story, same emotional chaos, and yes—I was just as hooked the second time around.

⭐ Why Four Stars Still Fits

I’m sticking with four stars for this one. Sure, it wasn’t exactly what I expected, but honestly, I had such a good time that I can’t even be mad about it.

The chemistry between these two? Absolutely addictive. Their totally opposite personalities made the romance even more fun, and I still got all the feels on my reread. Coming back to Alex and Ava felt like catching up with old friends, especially with the narrators giving them such distinct vibes.

I’ll admit, the whole dark-side buildup is still the one thing that makes me pause. But honestly, everything else just worked for me. By the end, I was already plotting which book in the series to pick up next—always a good sign, right?

So yes, bring on the rest of the chaos. My TBR pile is ready.

💘 Character Corner

Favourite Character Pairing: Alex and Ava together—the contrast between them is what kept me hooked
Most Compelling Character Contrast: Alex’s emotional restraint against Ava’s vulnerable strength
Book-Boyfriend Energy: Brooding, protective and emotionally unavailable, courtesy of Alex Volkov
Biggest Character Expectation Gap: Alex’s warnings about his dark side versus how the spice actually landed for me
Character Whose Vulnerability Stood Out: Ava, especially through Cindy Kay’s performance
Favourite Dynamic: Ava’s warmth gradually challenging Alex’s tightly controlled world
Biggest Red Flag: Alex’s possessiveness and need for control
Most Accurate Alex Description: A man determined to manage everything, including feelings that refuse to cooperate
Most Accurate Ava Description: Sunshine energy with painful memories and quiet strength beneath it

🖤 Alex Volkov — Composure With Complications

Alex’s cool, guarded personality is the core of this romance’s appeal. He’s the sort of character whose control makes every glimpse of emotion feel more significant.

Watching that composure become harder to maintain around Ava was especially effective. His resistance creates most of the tension: he wants distance, order, and emotional security, while their growing connection makes all of that increasingly difficult.

He also carries the book’s biggest expectation problem for me. The dark-side warnings became so noticeable that I started measuring the spice against them. I was still invested in him as part of the romance, but I wanted that point to stop being oversold.

Aiden Snow captured Alex’s controlled side beautifully, which made revisiting him through audio especially enjoyable.

☀️ Ava Chen — Warmth With Weight Behind It

Ava’s sunshine-y vibe isn’t just for show. It’s the way her vulnerability peeks through that makes her feel so real and layered, like someone you’d actually want to have a long chat with over a cup of tea.

She’s all warmth and creativity on the surface, but you can tell she’s carrying some heavy things from her past. That mix makes her openness hit even harder. There’s something about her gentle kindness and the way she just keeps going that makes you want to root for her even more.

Watching her bounce off Alex is half the fun. She brings this whole new emotional language into his world, and honestly, their attempts to figure each other out are way more interesting than just calling them opposites. It’s like watching two people learn a new dance together—awkward, sweet, and sometimes a little bit messy.

Cindy Kay’s narration really brought out both Ava’s softness and her quiet strength. It made her feel even more real to me, like catching up with an old friend and noticing something new about them.

🔥 Chemistry, Romance & Spice

🖤 The Romance

Honestly, Alex and Ava’s chemistry is still the main reason I keep coming back. They just have that spark, you know?

It’s that perfect mix of wanting each other and holding back—because of all the emotional baggage and, of course, the brother’s-best-friend situation. The anticipation is half the fun, honestly.

What I loved most is how they actually change each other. Ava’s warmth pokes at Alex’s walls, and his whole guarded vibe makes every little step closer feel like a big deal. Those vulnerable moments hit harder because both of them are carrying so much history.

For me, the emotional payoff is just as important as the swoony bits. Coming back to their story, I realised I wasn’t just here for the tension—I actually wanted to see them figure things out and get to the good stuff, feelings and all.

🌶️ The Spice

Let’s just say, Alex and Ava do not hold back. The chemistry? Absolutely sizzling. There are definitely some on-page scenes that had me reaching for a cold drink, but it’s not just about the spice—there’s a good dose of romance, emotional tension, and a bit of drama thrown in for good measure. If I had to rate it, I’d say three chillies feels just right.

If I’m being honest, I spent half the book bracing myself for something truly wild, thanks to Alex’s constant warnings. I was ready for full-on chaos, but what I got was a little tamer than I expected. Of course, your mileage may vary—if you like your spice on the milder side, you might find it just right.

There is some degradation language sprinkled in, so it’s not completely vanilla, but honestly? The actual dynamic felt a lot more standard than all of Alex’s ominous foreshadowing led me to believe.

Frequency: Several scenes across the developing romance.

Detail: Explicit, open-door content.

Kink level: Includes degradation language; overall less adventurous than the buildup suggested.

Overall spice rating: 🌶️🌶️🌶️

The chemistry absolutely delivered, but honestly, Alex might want to rethink his marketing strategy. I was expecting fireworks and got sparklers—but still had a good time!

🎧 Audiobook Notes

Narrators: Cindy Kay and Aiden Snow
Narration Style: Dual narration, alternating between the characters’ perspectives
This was actually my second time with this story, but my first time listening instead of reading. I’d already met these two on the page, so I was extra curious to see how they’d sound in my ears.

You know that feeling when you already love a couple from the book and you just hope the audiobook doesn’t mess it up? That was me, clutching my headphones and hoping for the best. Luckily, both narrators totally got what made these two click for me. The contrast was still there, and I found myself grinning at the familiar dynamic all over again.

☀️ Cindy Kay as Ava

Cindy Kay gave Ava this lovely mix of softness and real feeling, but you could still hear the steel in her spine. I love when a narrator can do both.

She made Ava feel like someone you’d actually want to have coffee with—warm, vulnerable, but not at all flimsy. That’s so important for a character who’s all sunshine on the outside but carrying some heavy stuff underneath.

I loved hearing all those layers in her voice. Ava’s sunshine energy felt real, like it belonged to someone who’s been through things. No trouble getting attached to her all over again.

🖤 Aiden Snow as Alex

Aiden Snow? He absolutely nailed Alex’s whole cool, collected vibe. I could practically see the raised eyebrow.

That restraint is such a huge part of who Alex is, and you could hear it in every line. He sounded like someone who keeps his cards close, which made his chapters feel totally different from Ava’s.

It worked so well for all his internal drama, too. You could really feel how hard he was trying not to let anyone in, and that delicious tension from the paperback was still there.

🎧 Why the Pairing Worked

Having both narrators really showed off how different these two are, and you could feel the gap between how they talk and feel.

Switching from Ava’s warmth to Alex’s walls-up attitude was honestly so satisfying. The way they bounced off each other pulled me right back into the story and reminded me why I fell for their dynamic in the first place.

Would I recommend listening? Absolutely, especially if you’re revisiting the story. The narration makes it so easy to slip right back into their world, like catching up with old friends.

💬 A Line I Had to Save

“You are the light to my dark, Sunshine,” he said in a raw voice. His lips brushed against mine as he spoke. “Without you, I’m lost.”

🖤 Final Thoughts + Come Chat

Twisted Love still works on me.

Listening to the audiobook felt like slipping back into a favourite jumper—suddenly all the chemistry, anticipation, and emotional chaos I remembered from my first read came rushing back. Alex and Ava are still the main event for me, with their opposites-attract energy, and hearing Cindy Kay and Aiden Snow bring those personalities to life was such a treat.

But let’s be honest, my little grumble about the whole ‘dark side’ buildup is still hanging around. All those warnings had me bracing for something truly wild, and the spice just… didn’t quite deliver the drama I’d been promised. Still, I was completely swept up in the romance, loved the emotional payoff, and found myself happily tangled up in the story all over again.

So yes, four stars feels just right. This reread was such a good reminder that sometimes, coming back to familiar characters is like catching up with old friends—especially when their signature emotional chaos still manages to pull you right in.

Alex, though, is still on my list for questioning about his so-called ‘dark side’ marketing. Honestly, sir, we need to talk.

Have you read Twisted Love? Did Alex’s “dark side” match your expectations, or were you also thinking, “Sir… where is it?” And have you tried the audiobook?

Come chat with me in the comments, and keep it spoiler-free for anyone meeting Alex and Ava for the first time. 🤎
