Caught Up is a seriously addictive follow-up that swaps the chaotic stalker comedy of Lights Out for second-chance obsession, emotional healing and one unforgettable heroine.

It didn’t quite reach the same five-star magic as Lights Out for me, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t have an incredibly good time. Lauren absolutely steals the show, Junior gradually works his way into your heart and their emotional history gives the romance a much heavier, more reflective feeling.

It’s dark, spicy and surprisingly tender—a worthy continuation of the Into Darkness series, even if Josh and Aly still own that top spot for me.

Ten years ago, Nico “Junior” Trocci broke Lauren Marchetti’s heart to protect her from the violent criminal world into which he was born.

Lauren was forced to rebuild her life without him. The quiet, book-loving girl Junior once knew grew into a confident and successful cam creator who refuses to apologise for her sexuality, her career or the woman she has become.

Junior, however, never truly let her go.

Unknown to Lauren, he has secretly watched her from the shadows for years. He became the first subscriber to her cam account and remained her most loyal supporter under a hidden identity, even as his lingering love gradually transformed into an all-consuming obsession.

When circumstances finally bring them back into each other’s lives, old wounds collide with undeniable chemistry. Lauren has no intention of simply welcoming back the man who shattered her trust, while Junior is determined to prove that she has always been—and will always be—his person.

But with mafia ties, dangerous secrets and a past that refuses to remain buried, earning their second chance may be the hardest thing either of them has ever attempted.

🌙 Going in with Very High Expectations

Let’s be honest—following Lights Out was always going to be difficult.

That book completely blindsided me. It was hilarious, ridiculously spicy, surprisingly sweet and filled with exactly the sort of chaotic energy I didn’t realise I needed. Josh promptly became one of those fictional men who takes up permanent residence in your head without paying a penny in rent.

Naturally, I went into Caught Up expecting another five-star obsession.

Did I get that?

Not quite.

But did I still have an incredibly good time?

Absolutely.

My biggest obstacle was expecting Caught Up to deliver the same experience as Lights Out. Although both books belong to the same dark and slightly unhinged world, their central romances are completely different.

Once I stopped waiting for Josh 2.0 and allowed Junior and Lauren’s story to stand on its own, everything began working much better for me.

👑 Lauren Completely Owned This Book

Forget Junior for a second.

Lauren is the reason this book shines.

Watching her transformation from the quiet, awkward bookworm she used to be into a woman who is completely comfortable with herself was one of my favourite character arcs I’ve read in a while.

She’s sexy.

She’s confident.

She’s unapologetic.

She knows exactly who she is and refuses to shrink herself to make anyone else more comfortable. The fact that she is a successful cam creator and doesn’t care who knows about it?

Honestly… iconic queen behaviour.

What I especially loved is that her confidence never felt like arrogance. It felt earned. Lauren has spent years understanding herself and learning to embrace the parts she once hid away, so every chapter from her perspective was incredibly satisfying.

She isn’t ashamed of her sexuality, but her character is so much more than her job or confidence. She is intelligent, emotionally perceptive and capable of recognising exactly what Junior did to her—even when she can understand why he believed he was protecting her.

Lauren doesn’t immediately forgive him because the romance requires it. She makes him face the hurt he caused and prove that he deserves another chance.

She felt like a real, complicated woman rather than a character written solely to become someone’s love interest.

🖤 Junior Took Longer to Win Me Over

Junior isn’t Josh.

I had to stop comparing them because they are two completely different types of dark-romance hero.

Where Josh has chaotic golden-retriever energy wrapped in darkness, Junior is quieter and heavier. He carries years of guilt, family trauma and unwanted responsibility on his shoulders.

He’s an enforcer and reluctant heir trapped within his father’s criminal organisation, performing brutal work while desperately wanting a life that belongs to him. His decision to leave Lauren may have been rooted in protection, but it still caused years of pain—and the story doesn’t allow him to escape that truth.

His romance is built around regret and redemption rather than playful banter, so naturally the tone feels different.

Junior’s behaviour is obsessive and morally questionable—this is absolutely still a stalker romance—but his devotion to Lauren never feels casual. He has spent years watching her, protecting her from a distance and supporting her anonymously because letting go was apparently never a genuine option.

Once I accepted him as his own character, I appreciated him far more.

His protectiveness made sense.

His obsession made sense.

And watching him slowly realise that Lauren never stopped being his person was incredibly satisfying.

He may not have replaced Josh in my fictional affections, but by the end? Junior had definitely earned his own space.

🫀 The Pain Beneath the Obsession

The darker elements might be what initially grab your attention, but there is far more emotional weight beneath the stalking, masks and mafia danger.

Junior and Lauren didn’t simply lose touch. Their separation left a wound that neither of them properly healed. He believed he was sacrificing his own happiness to keep her safe, while she was left believing the person she trusted had abandoned her.

That imbalance matters.

I appreciated that their reunion wasn’t treated as though ten years of heartbreak could disappear the moment they gave in to their attraction. Lauren’s anger is justified, and Junior needs to recognise that making a choice on someone’s behalf—even with protective intentions—doesn’t erase the damage it causes.

The result is a romance about rediscovery as much as reconciliation. They aren’t the same people they were when they first loved one another, so their second chance requires them to learn who they have both become.

🤝 I Loved How Connected the World Felt

One of my favourite things about this series is that it genuinely feels like one connected universe rather than a collection of completely separate romances.

Seeing familiar characters return immediately made me smile, and their appearances felt natural instead of being included purely as fan service.

But the unexpected highlight?

Junior and Josh’s friendship.

I absolutely adored watching those two interact.

Josh somehow brings out a lighter, more relaxed side of Junior, and every scene between them reminded me exactly why I loved the first book so much. Their personalities are different enough to make their interactions entertaining, but their friendship never feels unlikely or forced.

It also gives the series a growing found-family feeling. These morally questionable people might communicate through chaos, crime and wildly inappropriate jokes, but they genuinely care about one another.

That connection made me even more excited to continue with the series.

This isn’t the same emotional rollercoaster as Lights Out.

It’s slower emotionally.

More reflective.

Less laugh-out-loud chaotic.

More focused on healing.

The chemistry between Junior and Lauren is still undeniable—and yes, the spice absolutely delivers—but the emotional core centres on rediscovering each other after years apart.

Junior already knows he loves Lauren. His journey isn’t about falling for her; it’s about finally confronting his choices, escaping the life that stole their future and becoming someone who can stand beside the woman she has grown into.

Lauren’s journey is about deciding whether the love she once felt can survive the truth—and whether Junior deserves access to the confident, independent life she built without him.

Because of that, I was slightly less obsessed with the overall romance than I was with Josh and Aly.

Not because Junior and Lauren weren’t good together.

Simply because Lights Out set an incredibly high bar.

This is one of those frustrating four-star books where there wasn’t anything I actively disliked.

The writing was addictive.

The pacing kept me turning pages.

The romance was strong.

The spice delivered.

The characters were memorable.

But it never quite reached the point where I was thinking about it every second I wasn’t reading.

Sometimes a five-star read has a tiny spark of magic that is impossible to explain. For me, Caught Up came incredibly close—it simply missed that spark by the smallest margin.

And honestly?

That is still a fantastic place to be.

Four stars doesn’t mean “almost good”. It means this was a genuinely brilliant read that I thoroughly enjoyed and would happily recommend. It just didn’t create quite the same all-consuming obsession as its predecessor.

👑 Lauren Marchetti… Iconic Queen

From quiet book nerd to sexy, confident cam creator who refuses to apologise for who knows about it?

Iconic. Absolutely iconic.

Lauren’s confidence is one of the best things about the book because it isn’t performative. She isn’t pretending that nothing can hurt her, nor is she written as though sexual confidence makes her emotionally invulnerable.

She can own her sexuality and still carry the wounds Junior left behind. She can love him and still demand accountability. She can understand his reasons without automatically excusing his choices.

That balance made her feel incredibly authentic.

🎭 Nico “Junior” Trocci… Sir?

Junior isn’t the loudest or most playful fictional stalker in the series. His particular flavour of obsession is quieter, darker and far more patient.

This man secretly watched Lauren for years, became her first cam subscriber and stayed her most loyal supporter under a hidden identity.

Morally acceptable?

Absolutely not.

Perfectly suited to the book I deliberately chose to read?

Unfortunately, yes. 🖤

🖤 The Romance

The second-chance element gives Junior and Lauren’s relationship an emotional foundation from the beginning. Their love isn’t new; it has been buried beneath ten years of heartbreak, guilt and longing.

That history creates a different kind of romantic tension. Instead of wondering whether they will develop feelings, you’re waiting to discover whether the feelings they never truly lost can survive everything that happened between them.

Junior may have watched Lauren from afar, but the woman he meets again isn’t frozen in the past. She has grown, changed and built an identity beyond the shy girl he remembers.

I loved that he doesn’t want to change her back. His attraction includes the bold, successful and openly sexual woman she has become. He isn’t threatened by her confidence—if anything, he is completely in awe of it.

The romance is possessive, obsessive and morally grey, but it also has genuine tenderness underneath all that darkness.

🌶️ The Spice

Four chillies. Easily.

The spice is explicit, adventurous and completely unapologetic. It reflects Lauren’s confidence and gives the couple room to explore trust, power and kink within their relationship.

It also suits the characters. Lauren knows what she wants, while Junior is intensely focused on giving it to her—which makes their physical chemistry feel like part of their emotional dynamic rather than a collection of scenes added purely for shock value.

This is not a “casually listen without headphones while doing the housework” audiobook.

Unless you enjoy danger.

Or have incredibly understanding neighbours. 😅

The second I saw Teddy Hamilton’s name attached to this audiobook, I was locked in.

I genuinely think I could listen to that man read a supermarket shopping list and still be entertained.

He brings exactly the right level of intensity to Junior without making him sound exaggerated or over-the-top. His performance captures the weight Junior carries, while still allowing the character’s devotion, possessiveness and occasional lighter moments to come through.

Every emotional moment landed because of how naturally he delivered it.

Kasi Hollowell was equally brilliant as Lauren.

She perfectly captured Lauren’s confidence, vulnerability, humour and growth. Her performance made Lauren feel like a real person rather than simply someone being read from a page.

That balance was particularly important for a character whose confidence could easily have been overperformed. Kasi allows Lauren to sound self-assured without losing her warmth or the emotional scars beneath it.

Together, they feel like an incredibly natural pairing. Neither performance overshadows the other, and Junior and Lauren’s chemistry translates beautifully into audio.

This is definitely one of those romances I would recommend experiencing as an audiobook.

• You want the same playful chaos found in Lights Out

My verdict: Absolutely recommended, especially if you enjoyed Lights Out. Just go in expecting a different flavour of romance: less chaotic, more emotional and centred on a couple with years of shared history.

If you’re expecting Josh 2.0, you may come away disappointed. If you’re ready to meet a completely different hero and an unforgettable heroine with their own emotional journey, there is so much here to love.

And honestly? Lauren alone makes it worth picking up.
