⭐ Four Stars — Dark Fairytale Magic and the Beginning of a Fae Obsession

I picked up A Court of Thorns and Roses for the first time in 2024, and honestly, coming back to it felt like catching up with an old friend over tea. The dangerous magic, the lush Spring Court, the kind of slow-burn romance that makes you want to throw the book across the room and then immediately pick it up again—there’s just something magical about going back to the start of a story you love.

And yes, Tamlin absolutely earned a spot on my book boyfriend list. I’m keeping that little piece of my original reading experience right here. 😂

This one’s a solid four stars from me—completely immersive, full of feelings, and packed with the sort of fantasy romance that makes you forget about your laundry pile and just sink right in.

💭 The Quick Take

Reading A Court of Thorns and Roses honestly felt like falling headfirst into a fairy tale where Beauty and the Beast decided to throw a masquerade ball with fae royalty, ancient curses, and a romance that tiptoes up behind you when you least expect it. I kept telling myself I’d just read one more chapter, but you know how that goes. The world is so vivid I could practically smell the magic in the air, and even though this was a reread, I was completely swept away all over again. Love, survival, sacrifice—it’s all tangled up together, and apparently, so am I.

It’s a solid four stars from me, and yes, I’m already side-eyeing the next book on my shelf like it might sprout wings and fly away if I don’t start it soon. Honestly, I’m just happy to be lost in this world again.

📖 Story Snapshot — Spoiler Free

Picture this: Feyre Archeron, out in the freezing woods, bow in hand, doing whatever it takes to keep her family fed. Then she shoots a wolf (as you do), and suddenly a beast shows up at her door demanding she pay for it. Next thing she knows, she’s whisked away to Prythian, land of the fae, where nothing is safe and everything is beautiful and terrifying at the same time. And then there’s Tamlin. High Lord, mysterious, and honestly, the kind of fictional man who makes you want to throw the book across the room and then immediately pick it up again.

At first, Feyre is terrified (honestly, who wouldn’t be?), but curiosity and, well, other feelings start to creep in. Turns out, being surrounded by gorgeous fae and magical gardens doesn’t mean you’re safe. There’s something dark lurking in Prythian, and Feyre has to figure out just how far she’ll go for the people she’s come to love. No pressure, right?

📚 My Reading Experience

🌹 Returning to Where It All Began

Is there anything cosier than curling up with the very first book in a series you’ve fallen for? Honestly, it’s like visiting an old friend.

I first read this book back in 2024 and absolutely loved it, so picking it up again felt a bit like stepping into a familiar kitchen that still smells like your favourite cake. Even though I know exactly where the whole series is headed, I still got swept up in Feyre and Tamlin’s early moments and those first, slightly wobbly steps into Prythian.

What surprised me most was how much I could still appreciate this story for everything it gave me the first time around. Sometimes a reread just feels like coming home.

✨ A World I Could Picture So Clearly

Honestly, Sarah J. Maas just pulls you right into this world. The courts and all their magical creatures feel so real that I kept catching myself wishing I could step through the pages. There’s this constant sense that something is lurking just out of sight, with secrets and political games bubbling under the surface—Feyre never quite knows what’s coming next, and neither did I.

I absolutely loved how the Spring Court looks like something out of a fairytale—lush, dreamy, the kind of place you’d want to wander around with a picnic basket. But there’s this uneasy feeling underneath all that beauty, and it kept me on my toes the whole time. It’s the perfect mix of enchanting and unsettling.

This is exactly the sort of world I love to get lost in. I could picture every scene so clearly, like I was right there with Feyre, holding my breath and hoping I wouldn’t accidentally step on a twig. It all just felt so close and real.

🗺️ We Need to Talk About the Map

Can we just pause for a second to appreciate the map? It absolutely deserves its own little spotlight.

The way the map looks so much like Britain made me ridiculously happy. Obviously, I had to figure out where I’d land, and it turns out I’m right on the border between the Summer and Spring Courts.

This is clearly vital information about my personality, so I’ll be mentioning it at every opportunity. Just warning you now. 😂

🌹 Love, Survival and Sacrifice

What really got me was the mix of love, survival, and sacrifice. Feyre starts out with her whole world revolving around keeping her family going, and you can feel that grit in everything she does, even when the scenery changes from muddy boots to magical courts. That determination gives the whole romance and fantasy side of things a real heart, which is probably why I got so invested.

Honestly, I just wanted to see her find her voice and figure out who she was in this whole intimidating new world. She’s surrounded by all these powerful people with their own strange rules, and half the time I was rooting for her to just hold her ground. Her stubborn streak? Completely understandable, even when it lands her in trouble. I’d probably do the same, to be honest.

This story really made me think about what love actually asks of people, and how much they’re willing to give up for it. That’s what kept me hooked—the magic and danger were great, but it was the emotional stakes that made me care about everyone caught up in it all.

⭐ Why It Earned Four Stars

I gave this one four stars because I just loved getting lost in this world. I found myself completely tangled up in Feyre’s journey, and the romance and all that magical atmosphere kept me turning pages way past my bedtime.

For me, four stars means I really enjoyed it—and this book absolutely fits the bill. It’s one of those strong, memorable openings that I know I’ll want to revisit, and I’m already recommending it to anyone who’ll listen.

There’s something so lovely about the feeling that you’re just at the beginning of a much bigger adventure. Rereading it made me remember how special those first meetings and discoveries are—the excitement, the nerves, all those fluttery feelings.

💘 Character Corner

A Court of Thorns and Roses will always have a soft spot in my heart, mostly because it’s where this whole wild journey started for me. The first time I read it, I was swept up in all the beauty, danger, and that delicious romantic tension. Picking it up again felt like stepping back into a world I’d missed, and honestly, the excitement came rushing right back.

Feyre is the heartbeat of this story for me. I love how she’s clever and fiercely independent, but it’s her mistakes and stubborn streak that really make her feel real. I found myself rooting for her, even when she was making questionable choices, and hoping she’d find a way to be truly herself in a world that’s nothing like our own.

Tamlin is such an interesting mix—powerful, careful, and just vulnerable enough to make me want to give him a hug (or maybe a stern talking-to, depending on the chapter). On this reread, I still enjoyed those first sparks between him and Feyre. There’s something about those early chapters that pulls me right back in, every single time.

And can we talk about the GraphicAudio adaptation for a second? The cast, the sound effects, the music—it all made the beauty and danger of Prythian feel so much more real. I was completely hooked. If you’re thinking about trying this format, I honestly can’t recommend it enough. It’s like stepping right into the story.

So yes, four stars from me! This book pulled me straight into its world, gave me a heroine I could cheer for, and made going back to the beginning feel completely worth it. Sometimes a reread is exactly what you need to remember why a story still means so much.

Also, I’m still claiming my spot between the Summer and Spring Courts. That’s settled. 😂

Have you read ACOTAR, or are you thinking of starting it? Did Tamlin win you over in this first book, and which court are you claiming?

Come chat with me in the comments, and keep it spoiler-free for anyone stepping into Prythian for the first time. 🤎

🏹 Feyre Archeron — Our Fierce Survivor

Feyre is absolutely my kind of heroine. She’s resourceful, stubbornly independent, and will fight tooth and nail for the people she loves. Honestly, I was rooting for her from page one.

Right from the start, she’s got the weight of the world on her shoulders, and then—just for fun—the universe throws her into a place where nothing makes sense. I loved that she doesn’t magically have it all together. She’s stubborn, she messes up, she keeps going anyway. Honestly, it made me want to give her a cup of tea and a pep talk.

Watching her try to find her own voice and believe she deserves more than just scraping by? That hit me right in the feelings. The magic and romance are great, but it’s Feyre’s fight to carve out a place for herself that really stuck with me. I just wanted her to finally have a moment to breathe and be seen.

🌿 Tamlin — The Brooding Fae Lord Had My Attention

I have to admit, Tamlin had me hooked from the start.

Sure, he’s got the power and the brooding thing going on (classic), but what really got me was the quiet strength and loyalty, and those little flashes of vulnerability peeking out from behind all that armor. You know I’m a sucker for a character who’s carrying the weight of the world and still trying to do the right thing.

And let’s be honest, the whole beastly shapeshifting thing? Absolutely did not hurt his case. My Team Jacob heart is showing, isn’t it? Apparently I have a type, and yes, that definitely bumped up my rating. 🐺

Looking back, I get why those early Tamlin and Feyre moments worked so well for me. It all comes back to that mix of strength and softness that just gets me every time.

🔥 Chemistry, Romance & Spice

💞 The Romance

There’s something so satisfying about watching a story slowly peel back its layers, turning all that prickly fear and suspicion into real, honest-to-goodness feelings. I found myself rooting for that shift from wariness to something warmer, and by the end, I was completely invested.

Feyre steps into the Spring Court with her guard up, and honestly, who could blame her? Tamlin is all secrets and unreadable looks, which only makes their growing closeness feel even more tangled up in the magic and mystery of the place.

It’s the quiet moments that really got me—the little glances, the soft confessions, the way they let their walls down bit by bit. All that vulnerability and sacrifice made their love story feel so much heavier in the best way.

🌶️ The Spice

Yes, there’s on-page intimacy, but honestly, what really pulled me in was the delicious build-up—the anticipation, the spark, and that slow-burn feeling as the characters start to fall for each other.

I’d say this first book lands at a solid two chillies for me. The real magic is how the heat mixes with all the danger and those swoony emotional moments.

Frequency: Occasional.

Detail: On-page intimacy.

Kink level: Not a main focus of this review.

Overall spice rating: 🌶️🌶️

What really got me was the anticipation and that lovely emotional connection—my favourite kind of slow-burn.

🎧 Audiobook Notes

Narrators: Full cast — GraphicAudio production

Honestly, the GraphicAudio version took my whole reading experience up a notch.

All those different voices, the dramatic sound effects, the music—it was like having a movie play out right in my ears while I did the dishes. Scenes I already loved on the page suddenly had this extra layer of feeling and atmosphere, and I found myself completely swept up in the world. Honestly, I kept pausing just to soak it all in.

The atmosphere was the real star for me. The voices, the music, the little background sounds—they all worked together to make every scene feel bigger and somehow more real. I got to enjoy the story I already knew, but with this whole new performance wrapped around it. It made coming back to a favourite book feel like a treat all over again.

Now I just want every single book I love to get this kind of treatment. Honestly, how am I supposed to go back to plain old paperbacks when I know what’s possible? My dramatic heart has new standards.

Would I recommend giving it a listen? Absolutely. Experiencing the story this way was such a treat, and having the paperback to flip through at the same time just made it even better. Highly recommend for anyone who likes a little extra drama with their reading.
