The wolf kingdoms are darker, the political tension is rising and everyone appears to be falling hopelessly in love with Blake…

Everyone except me, apparently.

I’m still over here quietly defending Callum while the rest of the fandom prepares to throw him directly into the bin.

The Night Prince is a gripping return to the wolf kingdoms, filled with dangerous politics, uncertain loyalties and enough romantic tension to keep me fully invested from beginning to end.

Although I’m still completely obsessed with this series, this instalment dropped slightly from the five stars I gave The Wolf King to four. There wasn’t one enormous problem—it was more a combination of repeated descriptions and a new romantic dynamic that didn’t pull me in quite as strongly as it seems to have pulled in everyone else.

The world is still addictive, the audiobook performances are phenomenal and that ending?

Absolutely brutal.

Following the events of The Wolf King, the fragile balance between the wolf kingdoms begins to fracture even further.

Aurora finds herself caught deeper within their dangerous politics, surrounded by powerful figures whose motives aren’t always clear. Alliances are uncertain, old loyalties are tested and the decisions being made could alter the future of the entire kingdom.

As the threat grows, so does the complicated tension between Aurora and the men whose lives have become tangled with hers. Feelings, duty and power rarely point in the same direction—and trusting the wrong person could cost far more than a broken heart.

The story steadily builds towards another dramatic ending that leaves the fate of the characters—and the kingdom itself—hanging painfully in the balance.

And yes…it will leave you desperate for the next book.

🐺 Still Completely Invested in This World

First things first:

I am still very much obsessed with this series.

The wolf-kingdom setting, political tension and emotional stakes between the characters make these books incredibly addictive to read—or, in my case, read and listen to.

Lauren Palphreyman does a brilliant job of balancing the romance with the larger conflict. There is always something happening beneath the surface: a hidden motive, a shifting alliance or a piece of information that could completely change who you trust.

After giving the first book a solid five stars, my expectations going into The Night Prince were understandably high.

This time around, it landed at four stars.

And weirdly, it wasn’t because of anything particularly major.

I was still invested. I still wanted to know what happened. I still found excuses to put the audiobook back on.

It simply didn’t quite have that same five-star spark for me.

👀 The Blake versus Callum Debate

Okay…I know the fandom appears to be very loudly on one particular side here.

Everyone is fangirling over Blake and seemingly ready to bundle Callum into the nearest bin.

But honestly?

I’m not seeing it.

Blake didn’t click for me in the way he clearly does for many other readers. I can understand the appeal—he is powerful, mysterious and brings plenty of tension into Aurora’s story—but their dynamic didn’t pull me in as strongly as I expected it to.

Meanwhile…

I’m still very much a Callum girl.

Is he complicated? Absolutely.

Is he controversial? Ohhh yes.

But there’s something about his complexity, his intensity and the way his character interacts with the wider story that I personally find far more compelling.

His choices might frustrate me and I certainly don’t agree with everything he does, but he remains the character I’m most curious about. I want to understand what is happening inside his head and discover whether there is any hope left for the relationship I became invested in during the first book.

So while the internet continues swooning over Blake…

I’ll happily stick with Callum.

For now, anyway. There are still more books to come, so I reserve the right to be emotionally manipulated later.

👑 Politics, Power and Dangerous Alliances

The romantic drama may receive plenty of attention, but the expanding politics of the wolf kingdoms are still one of the strongest elements of this series.

There is a constant sense that everyone knows more than they are willing to reveal. Alliances can shift quickly, loyalty often comes with conditions and power is never as secure as it first appears.

That uncertainty keeps the story moving because even during quieter scenes, it feels as though another conflict is waiting just beneath the surface.

Aurora is no longer simply reacting to this world. She is becoming increasingly tangled within it, and the choices surrounding her carry much greater consequences than they did before.

I loved watching the wider story grow beyond the original romantic setup. The world feels more dangerous, the stakes feel higher and it is becoming increasingly difficult to separate personal feelings from political decisions.

💪 We Already Know the Wolf Men Are Hot

Fantasy and paranormal romance naturally rely heavily on physical descriptions. They help establish atmosphere, attraction and that intimidating supernatural presence these characters are supposed to possess.

However, I began noticing that certain descriptions appeared again…and again…and again.

Veins standing out on arms.

Tense physical features.

Overwhelming masculine presence.

And listen…we already know the wolf men are hot.

We really do.

Nobody reading this series has forgotten.

After a while, the repetition started pulling me out of the moment rather than adding anything new to it. It wasn’t a huge issue and certainly wasn’t enough to stop me enjoying the book, but it was one of those little things I kept noticing once my brain had picked up the pattern.

I think this was probably one of the main reasons the book lost that final star for me. A little more variety—or simply trusting that we remembered how ridiculously attractive everyone was—would have helped the writing flow more naturally.

😭 The Cliffhanger Strikes Again

Just like the first book…

We end on another cliffhanger.

The kind that makes you stare at the audiobook timer because there must surely be another chapter hiding somewhere.

There has to be.

But no.

Just emotional chaos, unanswered questions and the painful realisation that you’ve reached the end.

It’s frustrating in the best and worst possible way. I might complain about being left hanging, but it also proves how invested I still am—because I need the next instalment immediately.

And yes, I will absolutely be reading it the second I can.

Impatiently.

🐺 Callum… I’m Still Here

Callum is not an easy character to defend.

I know that.

His decisions are frustrating, his loyalties are complicated and there are moments when I desperately want him to communicate properly instead of making everything worse.

But I’m still fascinated by him.

There is a tension to his character that keeps me wondering what he will do next, and I haven’t forgotten the connection that made me care about him in the first book.

Perhaps I enjoy suffering.

Perhaps I’m simply loyal.

Either way, I’m not giving up on him yet.

🌑 Blake… Convince Me

Blake has all the ingredients that would usually have me immediately obsessed: power, mystery, danger and that darker energy fantasy romance does so well.

Yet something hasn’t fully clicked.

I don’t dislike him, and I can completely understand why readers are drawn to him. I’m simply not as emotionally invested in his connection with Aurora as everyone else appears to be.

There is still time for him to win me over, though.

And Sean Masters voicing him certainly isn’t hurting his chances…

💔 The Romance

The romantic tension becomes even more complicated in The Night Prince, with attraction colliding against existing feelings, damaged trust and responsibilities that extend far beyond the central characters.

This is not a simple case of choosing between two attractive wolf men—although that certainly doesn’t hurt.

Aurora’s relationships are tangled up in the politics and dangers of the world around her. Every emotional decision has the potential to create consequences elsewhere, which gives the romance far more weight than a straightforward love triangle.

Although the Blake dynamic didn’t completely land for me, I can appreciate what it adds to the story. It creates uncertainty, challenges existing attachments and forces Aurora to question what—and who—she truly wants.

I’m just not ready to abandon Callum yet.

🌶️ The Spice

There is plenty of physical attraction and charged tension, but the fantasy conflict, character relationships and political stakes remain central. The intimate moments feel connected to the emotional complications rather than being included simply for the sake of adding heat.

For me, the strongest part was the build-up: those looks, moments of closeness and increasingly complicated feelings that make you wonder who Aurora will ultimately choose.

It may not be the spiciest fantasy romance I’ve read, but there is certainly enough tension to keep things interesting.

Once again, the audiobook performances were absolutely phenomenal.

Honestly?

Oscar-worthy levels of storytelling.

The narrators don’t simply read the words—they perform them. You can hear the emotion, danger and subtle shifts within the relationships, making the entire experience feel wonderfully cinematic.

Zara Hampton-Brown continues to bring Aurora’s strength, vulnerability and growing uncertainty to life beautifully. She captures the emotional pressure surrounding the character without allowing her to feel overwhelmed by the men or political forces around her.

A special mention must go to Shane East, who is rapidly becoming one of my favourite audiobook narrators. His voice carries so much depth and presence, making even the quieter moments feel significant.

Then we have Sean Masters joining the cast as Blake.

I might not be completely sold on Blake as a character…

But that voice?

Yeah.

I’d melt.

It was an excellent casting choice and gave Blake exactly the powerful, darker presence he needed. If the character does eventually win me over, I suspect the audiobook performance will be partly responsible.

• Repeated physical descriptions easily pull you out of a story
• You want romance to take priority over political conflict
• Cliffhanger endings are a complete deal-breaker
• You prefer lighter fantasy without violence or darker themes

My verdict: Definitely recommended—especially if you loved The Wolf King. This sequel expands the world, raises the political and emotional stakes and leaves plenty of questions waiting to be answered.

Just prepare yourself for another cliffhanger…and possibly a heated internal debate over whether you’re Team Blake or Team Callum.
